In the height of global isolation, a renowned activist-poet, a voice that once challenged governments, suddenly vanishes. This is the premise for the virtual theatre, “The Last Poet”. How can we recreate the visceral, communal energy of live theatre when the physical stage is off-limits during COVID-19? The intention was to create a web-based performance space, was a glimpse into the future of immersive storytelling and an early foray into the metaverse. The project sought to transform an internet-enabled device from a passive screen into a site of investigation, where the mystery of the poet’s disappearance could only be unraveled through collective digital presence.
A Generative Labyrinth Upon entering the virtual theatre, the audience is met with a shifting, non-linear architecture. Built on a generative algorithm, the environment is never the same twice. A whirlwind of rooms and floating boxes serves as a digital psyche, transporting viewers through a mesmerizing space where exploration is the primary mode of engagement.
125 Possible Paths to the Truth The narrative is a mosaic of perspectives. Whether hearing from a neighbor, a publisher, or a distant acquaintance, the audience navigates a web of interconnected storylines. We designed the experience to be modular; with 125 possible user journeys, every viewer experiences a unique sequence of events. This ensures that the search for the poet feels personal and urgent.
Live Agency & Interaction The performance included a live voting feature for the audience to collectively influence the characters’ choices, directly impacting the narrator’s direction. By layering thematic soundscapes and cinematic shorts into the browser, we collapsed the distance between the performer and the participant in a digital medium.
