In an era where technology often alienates us from our physical surroundings, is it possible to reflect our city rhythms in our algorithms? Inspired by the Situationist concept of the dérive-the unplanned journey through a landscape, code.drift is a creative coding practice that treats the city as a collaborator rather than a static backdrop. The provocation was to create peer-led creative-coding spaces, reframing technology as an accessible creative tool rather than a barrier. The source of code comes through the "drift" - the act of observing and recording urban textures, sounds. By situating tech to the real world, we let the city’s uniqueness, and a participant’s own perspective, shape their creative coding journey.
The Urban Drift The process begins with participants wandering through a specific locale, be it the stepwells of Jaipur or the brutalist landscapes of New Delhi. Participants “drift” on a data-gathering walk to find their muse for creative coding, observing and recording a drop of water, chit-chat at a tea stall, an interesting texture on the wall, potter villages, old and new architecture, and much more.
Live-Coding 101 These sensory assets are channeled into a high-energy live-coded performance. The workshop teaches participants to use an open-source stack including P5JS, Hydra, Sonic Pi, and Strudel, with which they create immersive, audio-visual cityscapes in real-time. Typically performed in pairs, a sound artist and a visual artist weave together narratives interwoven with cityscapes - layered, and alive. Most participants experience a new relationship with technology, or begin coding for the first time!
A Collaborative Ecosystem Culminating in a performance, code.drift is a workshop series that democratizes creative technology. First-time users of generative coding tools feel the familiarity of a city’s history and culture. Participants are able to decolonise/recontextualize their inspiration for technology, and we lower the barrier to entry. The result is a seamlessly organic practice, inviting participants to go on observing their own streets as a source of inspiration, creating uniquely local, and unapologetically personal artefacts.
