FTII has been central to India’s state-led cinematic vision since 1960. However, of its roughly 6,000 graduates, only about 10% have been women. Popular film histories do not fairly represent their institutional and professional presence. This project was initiated to address this gender gap in archives. The intention is to use personal memory such as oral histories, private photographs, and student-era documentation, as a primary source to interrogate the nation-building vision of Indian cinema. By foregrounding the collective gendered experience of these women, the project seeks to provide a counter-narrative to traditional, male-centric film histories.

Non-linear navigation The digital platform presents content through randomized, unique pathways. This ensures that every visitor’s encounter with the archive is distinct, preventing a single, authoritative reading of the history.

Curated Fragments The exhibition consists of three primary media types: edited recordings of online conversations, digitized archival photographs from private student collections, and new video work created by the participants. These fragments are not made visible all at once; instead, they are revealed through user exploration, creating an intentional sense of discovery and individual pacing.
