Speculative workshops with Gen Z to map amorphous and sketchy socio-technical futures for emerging tech

BLOB Labs was created to move beyond traditional user research. Setup as a series of workshops with a speculative design and community-building core to explore the most desired futures for emerging technologies & cutting-edge product features. The provocation was to interrogate the social, gaming, and entertainment futures of emerging technologies. Our goal was to ensure that as products evolve, they remain deeply relevant to the generations that will define them.
Speculative Inquiry into the Metaverse (Node #1) Instead of accepting industry narratives, we invited participants to deconstruct the idea of the Metaverse to the extent of imagining it as a seamless extension of the physical. We posed radical questions: How does a persistent virtual world fit into the lived experience of future generations? What potentials remain untapped? Which third spaces are needed? This is how we center the inquiry on human desire rather than technical capability.
Building it with Digital Natives In our workshops, we utilize community-building as a research tool, allowing Gen Z participants to act as co-creators. Through applied speculative design and focussed group discussions, we uncover trends and aspirations that traditional market research often misses. This approach transforms abstract “socio-tech” futures into tangible, user-inspired concepts.
A Community of Speculators BLOB Labs is a collective, made with strategic imagination and a product-focused methodology. By collaborating with a high-trust community of digital natives, we provide a glimpse into the most desired versions of our technological future, ensuring that innovation is both accelerated and meaningful.
